Planning for the proposed Ely Callaway Learning Center, the new Pro Kids facility to be built in Oceanside, continues forward.

The 3,800 square foot Ely Callaway Golf & Learning Center will house a swing simulator room, 10-station computer lab, a classroom, small meeting/study room, retail, equipment storage, golf pros’ office, club repair center, and administrative offices.

Although built to fit on a 6.5-acre site, the course itself will have the look and feel of a regulation golf course. The player development course will consist of six holes ranging in length from 53 to 112 yards, with multiple tees for a full range of short game shots. Large greens will offer multiple hole locations. Practice greens, one for chipping and pitching and one for putting, will be provided, as will a driving cage with multiple hitting stalls. Adult public play will not be available on the course.

Pro Kids board and staff are busy working on the plans, supported by outside architects, engineers, and other professionals, many of whom are donating their critical services. We are working closely with the City of Oceanside and hope to have all the necessary permits to begin construction in 2010.

Key members of the team working on the planning effort include board members Steve McCracken, chair of our committee and representative of the Callaway Foundation, and Bill Hayer of Hayer Architecture, leading the design team. Course design is being prepared by Gary Bye of Rainville-Bye Golf Course Architects. Pro bono advisors include Jeff Jenco of Lusardi Construction and Steve Toohill of Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps, and pro bono engineering services are being supplied by Tri-Dimensional Engineering and TerraPacific Consultants.

We look forward to providing the kids of Oceanside and neighboring communities the type of instruction and mentoring that has benefited the youth of City Heights for 15 years.
